We have agreed in our family that next time we visit Madrid, we will go see the city’s horse racetrack “La Zarzuela”. Designed by Carlos Arniches, Martín Domínguez and the engineer Eduardo Torroja, it is one of the most brilliant architectural works of 1930’s Spain.
The roof of the grandstand in reinforced concrete is Eduardo Torroja’s most acclaimed work. The structural engineer outpaced contemporary colleagues, delivering new ways of looking at structures, showing off strength without compromising aesthetics. The roof still looks impressive today.
Having a drink at the night races is something everyone should try. I had great fun doing this while studying in Madrid.
